The city embraced by seven hills, was known as Thiru-Ananthapuram or the holy city of Ananta Nag in the past. Its first stint with fame came in 1750 when the capital of Travancore shifted from Padnavapuram to Trivandrum. The city was renowned for being an important trading point since ages for its ivory, spices and sandalwood. Till the early part of 19th century it retained its old charm without any change in the political and social sphere.
Culturally rich, it is is immersed in folklore, literature and ancient tradition since ages.
With Marthanda Varma, the Father of modern Travencore(1729-1758 AD), modern history began. This period added new feathers to the crown of Thiruvananthpuram when it became an important centre of intellectual discourses and artistic activities. The golden period arrived when Maharaja Swathi Thirunal (1829-1847 AD) took over the reigns of the city which led to an overall development in the sphere of culture and economy.
The year 1931 is another important year in the history of the city. It was the era of Maharaja Shri Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma who is known for contributing a lot in the advancement of the city.
When Travencore was made a part of the Indian Union after Independence, lot of changes also took place in the policy of the State Government. On 24th march, 1948, Sri. Pattom A.Thanu Pillai's ministry was formed. On November 1, 1956, the State of Kerala came into being.
