Geography of Trivandrum

Thiruvananthapuram is located on serene hills by the sea shore. It is located at 8.5N 76.9E on the west coast adjacent to the southern tip of mainland India. The city and the suburbs span over an area of about 250 square kilometers. It is merged between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The average elevation is 16 ft from the sea level.

 

The area can be divided into two geographical regions, the midlands and the lowlands. The midland region consists of low hills and valleys adjoining the Ghats. The lowland consists of a narrow stretc laced with shorelines, rivers and deltas, dotted with coconut palms. Vellayani lake is the biggest fresh water lake in the district.It is located in the suburbs of the city. The Karamana and the Killi are the two important rivers flowing through the city.

 

The eastern suburbs are occupied by the highlands.Agasthyarkoodam is the higest point which is about 1890 m above sea level. Ponmudi and Mukkunimala are the two famous hill-resorts situated in close proximity to the city.
